When I brought Floyd home from that kill shelter in Oklahoma, he was a quivering, emaciated wreck. He jumped at every sound, he ran from everyone, and his inner-struggle between needing affection and being terrified of humans caused him to pace endlessly around the house. He had been heavily abused, and we didn’t even know if rehabilitation was possible.

But after months and months of working with him, Floyd has become the most affectionate, intelligent, and fantastic companion a person could hope for. When new people walk through our door, his curiosity and love quickly overcome his apprehension. When one of us stands up, he now comes to us in anticipation instead of cowering and hiding. He’s become a fast and eager learner, and is easy to train.

He even stops to wipe his feet when he comes inside instead of barreling into our house with his muddy feet (I’m lookin’ at you, Barnabus).

But a lot more has changed over the last year than Floyd. When I brought him home, either Lenore or I were home nearly all the time, and our work weeks rarely exceeded forty hours. Now with Lenore’s new job and my new position we are rarely home, and definitely not home enough to give Floyd the attention, exercise, and affection he needs to thrive.

To cut to the chase (finally, ugh), Lenore and I need to find Floyd a new home, a place with loving owners who have who have the time to continue to help him become an even more awesome pet than he has been for us. He’s house-broken, has had all his shots fairly recently, is neutered, and is socialized with children, other dogs, and cats. He’s also completely fucking adorable.

So if any of you in the area are looking for a new dog to bring into your family, or know someone in a similar position, please drop me a note in my askbox. We’re not asking any money as long as a friend (or a friend-of-a-friend) is willing to adopt Floyd, and will provide his potential new friends with a very nice dog crate, his bed, his toys, his rabies tag, and contact information to his previous two veterinarian clinics. If a stranger is interested in adopting him, we’re asking for a small payment of $20 to make sure they aren’t some kind of weird dog killer or fighting-dog trainer.
